ISSN 0772-084X AFRIKA FOCUS Vol. 2, Nr. 2, 1986 Tijdschrift van de Afrika-Vereniging van de Rijksuniversiteit Gent (voorheen A VR U G-Bulletin, 1972-1983 ). Periodical of The Africa Assocation of the State Uni versity of Ghent, Belgium (formerly A VR VG-Bulletin, 1972-1983 ). De redactie Scientists of the industrialized world have long studied Africa, and some of them still do, primarily in order to teach Africans how they, as observers, think about Africa and the Africans. Gradually, a group of scholars had become aware that information about Africa, directly or indirectly, can be useful for the whole world,. thus also for their own societies. More and more scientists 1oere finally beginning to admit that Africans also have interesting things to say and write about Africa. Nevertheless, it appears that an overdue award of a Nobel Prize is still needed for many to open African pages. At a more modest level that of Afrika Focus, the editorial board is pleased to be able to publish, in the tradition of thefournal of the Africa Association of the State University of Ghent, articles by African scientists. In this way we hope that Africa Focus will grow as a forum not only about Africa but also with Africa. The editors
