The fourth volume of Ming Qing yanjiu is published in the context of the International Project of the Chinese Encyclopedia of Chinese History and Culture. The Project is promoted by the Dipartimento di Studi Asiatici of the Istituto Universitario Orientale of Naples and by the Istituto Italiano per l' Africa e l'Oriente of Rome. This year we intended to meet our deadline and publish this issue within 1995, but the engagements in the preparation of the Festschrift for Prof. Lionello Lanciotti did not allow our pu中oses. The reader will notice improvements in the format of Ming Qing yanjiu, and from now on it wi11 be possible to include the non-Latin letters inside the text. This issue presents new original contributions concerning mainly linguis tics, painting manuals, institutional history, literature, social and economic history, and history of mentality in China. Dr. Michela Bussotti's rich survey focuses on a Ming dynasty wood block printing which is kept in the Naples National Library. Dr. Michela Bussotti is now research fellow in Paris.
