Innovations include a chapter (by L.C.) on varieties of Portuguese, systematic indications of divergences between European and Brazilian varieties, and cautious nods to modern linguistics in the treatment of phonology and verbal categories. Even more traditional, Vasco da Fonseca, Introduction a l'etude de la langue portugaise a l'usage des etrangers, vol. I, L, Instituto de Cultura e Lingua Portuguesa, Ig8 pp., gives a capable account of orthography and history of the language, and an orthographically based phonetics. In contrast, Maria Helena Mira Mateus et al., Gramatica da Lingua Portuguesa, C, Almedina, 1983, 568 pp., is an ambitious manual of modern Portuguese linguistics, difficult but rewarding, aimed primarily at linguists.
