Plato

Plato 1 Collections of Articles In Plato and the Divided Self , the editors have put together an impressive collection of essays on the tripartite soul. 1 The book proposes to look at the theory not just in the Republic but also with reference to dialogues before and after, as well as its reception in some later Platonists—Plutarch, Galen and Plotinus. Part I features essays looking at the relation between tripartition and themes in some earlier dialogues, e.g. virtue in the Phaedo (Iakovos Vasiliou) and enkrateia in the Gorgias (Louis-André Dorion). Part II focuses on the tripartition in Republic , including essays by Rachana Kamtekar on personification, Tad Brennan on spirit, James Wilberding on appetite, and Raphael Woolf on the intriguing Glaucus passage in Book 10, with its suggestion that the non-rational parts of the soul may not belong to its true nature after all. Finally, in one of the most stimulating and provocative papers in the volume, ‘Psychic contingency in the Republic ’, Jennifer Whiting argues that in the case of philosophers there is no appetitive part any more, even though they still have appetites. The book continues in Part III with essays about post- Republic dialogues: Frisbee http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Phronesis Brill
