This book discusses the following parallels between Near Eastern literature and Hesiod: the Hittite (originally Hurrian) Kumarbi and Ullikummi myths with the story of the dynasties of the gods and the castration motif ; Enuma Elish, the Babylonian Creation Epic, which like Hesiod's Theogony culminates in a eulogy of the power and the justice of the greatest god; the Epic of Era by the Babylonian poet Kabti-ili-Marduk, who announces his name (cf. Th. 22), receives his inspiration in the night (cf. Th. 9) and is anxious to affirm the reliability of his work (cf.
