One-way contrast vs. two-way contrast: On the semantics of henla; and yuanla; in Mandarin Chinese · WU Jiun-Shiung Both and obey a contrastive constraint: they show contrast in whether a proposition holds at different times. There are three ways to satisfy this contrastive constraint. First, there is contrastive information in the context specifying whether a proposition holds; second, a proposition holds at a time but not at a later time; and third, a proposition does not hold at a time but holds at a later time. The semantics of utilizes the first two ways and the semantics of yuaniai uses all three. In terms of the last two, shows one-way contrast while demonstrates two-way contrast.
