Abstract

447 sv ies, although the mistake may be Elias'. There are two possible explana- tions for the corruption: (a) 6arLq, to be read in the 'corrected' argument in fine, spread from there to the paradox itself and to its explanation, pro- ducing the jarring ... xot potkoyiJy6q Eawv Ev 't4) To yap 5 ar t q ... , or (b) 6JIiq is a corruption (vulgarization) of ei Tes even in the 'corrected' argument in fine. In (ps.) Philoponus, it only ocurs in fine, in Elias also elsewhere. I see no definite argument in favour of one of these possibilities vs the other. But the text in (ps.) Philoponus looks like being an abbreviation 4) of the text in Elias, so perhaps 6a-cLq in fine is right. If it is also corrupt in fine, this may be the place were the corruption occurred first. 3723 KB BILTHOVEN, Obrechtlaan 57 J. MANSFELD 1) K. Hülser, Die Fragmente zur Dialektik der Stoiker, Bd. IV 6 (xeroxed preprint Konstanz Sept. 1982). The first version of the present note had already been ac- cepted for Mnem. when, through the kindness of Dr. Hülser, I received copies of his very useful collection spring 1983.
