This book by Konstantinos Tsitselikis, associate professor in the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, comprises an Introduction, four Parts, Appendices, bibliography and an Index. I will anticipate my conclusion by stating from the very beginning that the Old and New Islam is an intellectual accomplishment. I will explain myself below. The author traces the origins and trajectory of historical Islam in Greece merging it with the current migration flows from Muslim countries which have resulted in the creation of a new Islamic community. He uses an exhaustive bibliography and archival material, relevant Greek and international legislation and case-law along with interviews. All of the book’s chapters follow the main argument of the study and the historical axis connecting the Greek legal order and Islam in Greece from the very foundation of the modern state to the present time. The book’s narrative is based on an interdisciplinary legal and historical argument. In that sense, the Old and New Islam is par excellence an outstanding piece of Greek legal history. The book, the first of its type, starts by exploring the weight of history in shaping and understanding legal regulations regarding the position of Islam in the Greek public order.
