OÖGENESIS IN THE ROOT-KNOT NEMATODE MELOIDOGYNE JAVANICA 1) BY A. C. TRIANTAPHYLLOU Department of Genetics, N. C. State College, Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.A. Oögenesis was studied in several isolates of Meloidogyne javanica (Treub) from the United States, Europe, Africa and Australia. Oögonial divisions were normal. Maturation of oöcytes consisted of one mitotic division which gave rise to one polar nucleus and the egg pronucleus. There was no evidence of synapsis. At late prophase or early metaphase chromosomes consisted of two discrete chromatids and varied from 0.3 to 0.8 µ in length. Four egg-mass isolates from the United States had 48 (2n) whereas an isolate from Greece and another from Rhodesia had 46 chromosomes. A population from England comprised individuals with 44 and 43 chromosomes. Egg-mass isolates from this population showed no variation and had either 44 or 43 chromosomes. Similarly, a population from Australia cytologically consisted of two forms, one with 46 and another with 44 chromosomes. Sperm entered the oöcytes at late prophase or during metaphase and was visible at one pole of the egg until the anaphase of the first cleavage division.
