Brill, Leiden, 2006 Iran and the Caucasus, 10.1 NOTES ON THE VOCABULARY OF ABYĀNE’Ī ∗ MAHMUD JONEIDI-JA‘FARI Yerevan State University Tehran University Abstract In his article, the author maintains the view that within the Central Iranian linguis- tic continuum, there is a separate dialect area including ten small villages, which he calls the Abyāne group, after the name of its most typical member. He supports his argument by discussing two characteristic isoglosses for this group―the terms for “mouth” and “dog”. Abyāne (Vyūna) is a small village in a mountainous region 50 km north-east of Natanz, at the top of the Barz-rūd valley stretching about 25 km westward from the Hanǰan bridge on the old Kashan- Isfahan road. 1 On both sides of this valley, beside Abyāne, there are 10 small villages situated close to each other―starting directly from the main road: Hanǰan, Yārand, Komǰān, Barz, Tare (Ṭare), and Abyāne, and on the other side: Volūgerd, Čīme, Tekye-sādāt, Bīdhend (Vyend, Ve- hend), and Farīzhand (Farīzand).
