His specialties are Sino- Western interactions and traditional Chinese social theory. His major work has dealt with German imperialism in Shandong, and with nineteenth- century Chinese radicalism. His most recent book, Th e Chinese Revolution in Historical Perspective , uses traditional Chinese theories to narrate the story and to analyze China’s interactions with the West. He is currently completing a full-scale biography of Anson Burlingame, drawn to his subject by Burlingame’s signifi - cant American and intercultural life. Tsuchida Akio is Professor of Chinese Studies at Chuo University and a Research Fellow at Toyo Bunko (Oriental Library) in Tokyo. A graduate of Tokyo University, where he majored in Asian Studies and International Relations, he had also done research at Nanjing University, Academia Sinica, and Stanford University. His recent publications include, Senkanki no Higashi- Ajia Kokusaiseiji (International relations in East Asia during the interwar period) (Chuo University Press, 2007, co-editor) and Gendai Chugoku
