Notes and news

Notes and news Notes and news DUTCH AUCTION RECORDS In the second half of 1985 book auctions by the larger firms were few and far between: one by Beijers, two by Van Gendt and one by Van Stockum. Van Gendt's sale of 1 and 2 October 1985 had many fine lots, and prices reflected this. A fine book of hours (Northern Netherlands, c.1450 ?) fetched f 24,000 and a slightly later one f 15,000, while a printed version (Paris, Kerver, 1512) reached the same price. At f 32,000 Blaeu's book of Low Countries towns (Amsterdam 1649, Koeman Bl. 64-5) stayed well below the estimate off 40-50,000, in contrast to his Atlas major (Amsterdam 1662, but 1665 for vol. 1) with 65 extra maps, the whole attractively coloured, which went for f 165,000. The f 9,000 paid for F. Valentijn, Oud en nieuw Oost-Indien (Dordrecht/Amsterdam 1724-6) was not bad either, considering the estimate of f 4-5,000. Other respectable prices, if perhaps not quite up to expectations, were the 57,000 and f 44,000 given for C. J. Trew, Hortus nitidissimis [ ... florum imagines (Nuremberg 1750-86) with 120 of the 180 plates and Plantae selectae (ibid. 1750-73), i.e. without the supplement of 1790-2. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Quaerendo Brill
