SOCIETY LAURIE BERNSTEIN (Camden, NJ, USA) "A NECESSARY INSTITUTION IN THE CAPITALIST WORLD": SOCIALISTS AND WORKERS CONSIDER PROSTITUTION* In The Dark, a 1907 novella by Leonid Andreev, a twenty-six-year-old rev- olutionary hides from the police in a brothel. The protagonist is a virgin and intends to remain one, but for the sake of his masquerade, he follows a young woman named Liuba to her room. Liuba cannot believe that her would-be client is not interested in sex, and responds to his sympathy for her degrada- tion and his protestations of sexual innocence with an indignant slap. Strug- gling to do the right thing, the confused young celiba*.4ets-himself -se--- duced. But Liuba recognizes this as more of the same "fineness"-just another sample of the intelligent's deep self-righteousness and superiority. Prostitute-- required comradeship in "the dark," not pity. The revolutionary can only agree, handing her the gun he had planned to use in a political assassination. He then raises his glass for a toast that epitomized the radical intelligentsia's self-abnegation: "To those who are blind from birth! Ye who can see, pluck out your eyes!
