Again I begin with the commentaries and translations and in particular with Hermann Schibli’s annotated translation of the two surviving works of Hierocles of Alexandria, the Commentary on the Golden Verses of the Pythagoreans and the treatise On Providence which survives only in summaries and extracts made by Photius. 1 Part I of this book, 163 pages on the life and philosophy of Hierocles, could almost have been published as a separate monograph, but S. tells us in his preface that his initial plan was simply to provide the fi rst modern English annotated translation of the Commentary on the Golden Verses , and that translation is still central to the volume as a whole.
