Mission and Human Rights 13 Workshop 2 Moderator: MICHAEL BOURDEAUX Mission and Human Rights Session 1: General Considerations (Michael Bourdeaux) (a) It is clear that Mission and Human Rights must be inter-connected, but this has not always been the case in the past, nor is it to- day. The traditional missionary was - and occasionally still is - insensitive to the basic rights of those evangelized (examples from Africa). This is especially hard for missionaries coming out of wealthy conservative evangelical backgrounds (especially Middle America), though the insensitive mistakes they make are usually from good motives. Is the struggle for justice integral to Christian mission and evangel- ism, or is it just one consequence of the Christian faith? (b) 20th Century - particularly post World War II - has seen growth of awareness of this problem. Most missions now want to see an African church in Africa, not an English or American one. But some missions to USSR want to see a Protestant Russia, not an Orthodox one (examples). What does a missionary church think of the rights of Muslim culture? (c) Are the words "mission" and "church" co-terminous?
