Lifting Hearts to the Lord: Worship with John Calvin in Sixteenth-Century Geneva, by Karin Maag

Lifting Hearts to the Lord: Worship with John Calvin in Sixteenth-Century Geneva, by Karin Maag Karin Maag, Lifting Hearts to the Lord: Worship with John Calvin in Sixteenth-Century Geneva, The Church at Worship: Case Studies from Christian History (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2016), 209 pp., $ 28.00 (ISBN 9780802871473).This volume is a wonderful contribution to Eerdmans’ series on Christian worship in various times and places. The series provides “user-friendly documentary case studies in the history of Christian worship” (ix). As such, it is an easily accessible yet comprehensive introduction to the thought and worship practices of Calvin and the Genevan reformation.Part One (“Locating the Worshiping Community”) focuses on explaining the liturgical, geographical, and historical context of the sixteenth-century Genevan reforms. A short overview of the history of Geneva is followed by a threefold timeline of events from 1500 to 1600. The timeline covers events in the world, in Christianity, and in Geneva. The timeline is a useful tool that helps connect events in Geneva with other major events in history. Another key feature of this “user-friendly” text are the sidebar annotations. These annotations explain such words as ‘catechism’ or ‘consistory,’ which may not be familiar to the average reader. Many annotations also ask questions of the reader, giving them an opportunity to engage with the material http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Reformed Theology Brill
