L O G O S Librarians in the US can contribute to national issues: A president looks back Richard M Dougherty Professor of Information and Library Studies at the University of Michigan since 1978 (and Director of Libraries until 1988), Dick Dougherty has served his national and the international communities in many capacities. H e was President of the Ameri• can Library Association in 1 9 9 0 - 9 1 , an experience on which he here reflects. H e has served on the boards of the Research Libraries Group, the Association of Research Libraries and the Society for Scholarly Publishing. From 1 9 8 0 - 8 5 , he was successively Secretary-Trea• surer and Chairman of IFLA's R o u n d Table of Library Journals.
