H e was President of the Ameri• can Library Association in 1 9 9 0 - 9 1 , an experience on which he here reflects. H e has served on the boards of the Research Libraries Group, the Association of Research Libraries and the Society for Scholarly Publishing. From 1 9 8 0 - 8 5 , he was successively Secretary-Trea• surer and Chairman of IFLA's R o u n d Table of Library Journals.
