THE ACT OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE RULER ( BAI {A ) IN 19 TH CENTURY MOROCCO 1 BY BETTINA DENNERLEIN Introduction Although the importance of the bai{a in pre-colonial Morocco is widely recognized, 2 particular bai{a documents and the actual pro- cedures and practical issues involved have not yet been systemati- cally studied. The aim of this article is to suggest that, focusing on the actors involved, the analysis of bai{a documents and related sources may be a useful tool for exploring certain aspects of the social and political history of pre-colonial Morocco. To illustrate the documentary value of these sources, the example of the act of allegiance to the sultan Maul¸y al-Ýasan in 1873 will be discussed in detail.
