Even for Lawrence Collins, already eminent in the field of private international law, it has taken radical changes in the structure of the legal profession in England to allow him to scale the fifth and final peak in a remarkable career. In October 2000 he became a full-time High Court Judge in the Chancery Division, the first solicitor to do so, leaving his practice in an eminent city firm for the relative solitude of the Bench, and embarking on a fresh adventure at an age when most around him would prefer the comforts of retirement.
