139 Profile / Profil Sir Lawrence Collins Teacher, author, practitioner, advocate and judge – to have achieved distinction in all these roles as a lawyer is rare. Even for Lawrence Collins, already eminent in the field of private international law, it has taken radical changes in the structure of the legal profession in England to allow him to scale the fifth and final peak in a remarkable career. In October 2000 he became a full-time High Court Judge in the Chancery Division, the first solicitor to do so, leaving his practice in an eminent city firm for the relative solitude of the Bench, and embarking on a fresh adventure at an age when most around him would prefer the comforts of retirement. Paradoxically, he is unlikely to be followed by very many others. Such is the increasingly specialised nature of legal practice in the foremost UK law firms that few solicitors would be prepared for the enormous variety of legal issues that confronts a Chancery judge.
