461 on which social levels this cult spread. The fourth ("L'imagerie") deals with origin and meaning of the tauroctonia, its representations, the two different cycles of reliefs around this central scene, and "Aion leontocephale" (not to be identified with Zervan Akaranya). The fifth chapter l' 'Le culte") contains discussions of the functions of the Mithraeum, the 7 degrees in the hierarchy, the initiation rite, and the sacred meals. In the sixth chapter ("La doctrine"), the mithraist's view of world history, cosmology, soteriology, eschatology, and his doctrine of sacrifice are discussed. The final chapter treats the causes (political, social, religious) of "la fin du mithriacisme". A three page bibliography concludes the book. Although the book is not long, the author gives a good survey of the problems in this difficult field without over-simplifications. The presentation of the materials is mostly adequate and the discussion well-balanced. No extreme points of view are defended. As a first introduction to Mithraic religion, this study can be recommended. UTRECHT, Faculty of Theology P. W. VAN DER HORST L. KAHN, Hermès passe ou les ambiguïtés de la communication.
