198 narratives of XV-XIX represent earlier traditions than those of VII, 9 ff. The liturgy (XV, 7b - XVI, 1; XVI, 15b - XVII, 9; XVIII, 6b - XIX, 8) shows dualistic features, which is due to influence of the frame-work. Chap- ter III discusses the historical origins of XIV, XV-XIX. Col. XIV betrays a Maccabean background, whereas XV-XIX point to a Roman date. The structure of cols. X-XIV is very complicated. These columns contain a series of hymns and prayers, most of which deal with war in some way. In the author's opinion this collection was taken partly from a liturgical book and partly from a collection of hymns. The various parts are thorough- ly discussed. Sometimes the Qumran dualistic theology is clear, sometimes it is not. Finally the author deals with col. 1. This column seems to be an introduction to 1 QM as a whole : it contains a summary of the entire final war bringing together the vision of cols. II-IX as well as of XV-XIX. In conclusion the author states that the material in 1QM extends from the Maccabean period to the first century C.E., and contains several different traditions. Though the author, as well as other scholars, has to work with hypotheses, his book is a most valuable contribution to the study of the War Scroll. J. REVIEW OF BOOKS L.
