Heidel- berg: Universitätsverlag Winter 2006, VIII + 279 p. ISBN 3-8253-5002- 9, € 64. In Prudentius’ impressive oeuvre the collection of twelve hymns, entitled Cathemerinon , stands out because of its concentration on everyday Christian life. Th is is clearly indicated by its title, the genitive plural of καθημερινά , ‘Tageslieder’, ‘hymns for every day’. Greek titles are quite common throughout the history of Latin literature (see for this K.-E. Henriksson, Griechische Büchertitel in der römischen Literatur . Helsinki 1956). In fact, Prudentius uses only one Latin title: Contra Symmachum . Strictly speak- ing, Cathemerinon merely denotes the first six hymns, which follow the day’s course from gallicinium to bedtime. Hymns 7-12 do not concern various moments of the day, but of the calendar. Th e twelve hymns have been written in various lyrical metra, and they are all structured in stanzas. Th e largest piece (7) has 220 verses, the short- est (8) 80. Th e collection has been the subject of much scholarly attention. Th e monographs of W.
