Early in the twentieth century, this debate focused on the origin of various beliefs of the early Christ-movement. This one-sided focus on ideas led to later sociological and anthropological studies that focused more exclusively on societal patterns and developments. In some ways, historical criti cism became identified with these sociological concerns, while beliefs and theology were dismissed as ideology. Currently, the recognition that social factors and ideol ogy interact closely in one historical process is quickly gaining ground, fuelled by advances in cognitive and social psychology.
