Afterwards, this Groningen movement was crushed between Calvinist orthodoxy to its right and historical-critical ‘modernist’ or ‘liberal’ theology to its left, while its centrist position in the then largest Protestant denomination in the Netherlands, the Dutch Reformed Church, was taken over by the moderately orthodox faction of so-called ethischen. Its rapid marginalisation in the last quarter of the nineteenth century is probably responsible for the lack of attention that the Groningen movement has received in historiography on Dutch Protestantism ever since.
