Afterwards, this Groningen movement was crushed between Calvinist orthodoxy to its right and historical-critical ‘modernist’ or ‘liberal’ theology to its left, while its centrist position in the then largest Protestant denomination in the Netherlands, the Dutch Reformed Church, was taken over by the moderately orthodox faction of so-called ethischen. Its rapid marginalisation in the last quarter of the nineteenth century is probably responsible for the lack of attention that the Groningen movement has received in historiography on Dutch Protestantism ever since. Until recently, the shelf with publications that exclusively focus on this movement contained only two monographs that were written in the last few decades: Jasper Vree’s 1984 dissertation on the formative and earliest phases of Groningen theology between 1820 and 1843, and Rienk Klooster’s 2001 doctoral thesis on the influence of Groningen theology on church life in the province of Friesland from 1830 to 1872.
