Abstract

226 cally orientated introduction and concise explanatory notes, the present book reproduces the New English Bible translation of 1 and 2 Esdras. The commentary on 1 Esdras by COGGINS stresses the textual relationships of the book with 2 Chronicles and the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. In his introduction to 2 Esdras KNIBB emphasizes the composite character of the writing, since ch. 1, 2 and 15 do not belong to the original work. The usually brief notes mainly refer to other biblical passages. This proce- dure results from the fact that the commentary is meant for the general reader who does not have access to other sources. The same fact, however, renders the book less suitable for profound study of the text. Nevertheless, although the commentators had to make their choice from a wide range of material, they have succeeded in sorting out the data which are important for those readers who want to get acquainted with two rather unknown writings.)
