Johannes XXIII. im Urteil der Geschichte - oder die Macht des Klischees WALTER BRANDMOLLER / AUGSBURG-ROM Mit der vorliegenden Studie soil der Versuch einer Antwort auf die Frage untemommen werden, wie und auf Grund welcher Quellen das in der Ge schichtsschreibung fast allgemein rezipierte Bild von der Perst>nlichkeit Baldassarre Cossas entstanden ist, der als Johannes XXIII ., als "Papst" der Pisaner Obedienz, von 1410-1415 eine entscheidende Rolle in der Ge schichte des GroBen Schismas (1378-1417) gespielt hat. I. Die ausftlhrlichste Darstellung verdanken wir Dietrich von Nieheim in seinem De vita et fatis Constantiensibus Joannis XXIIi In De Scismate wird dieser our beilaufig erwahnt. Darilber hinaus rechnete Nieheim - wenn es denn sein Werk ist - in Invectiva in diffugientem e Constantiensi concilio Joannem XXIIt, das noch 1415 entstanden ist, mit diesem ab. De vita et fatiss hingegen ist zwischen Abdankung und Tod Gregors XII., also 1415-1417 entstanden - N ieheim spricht n!m lich von dem vir ve nerabilis Angelus, nunc episcopus Portuensis • Da die Invectiva sich in hyperbolischer Schmlihrhetorik erscht>pft und kaum Sachdienliches bietet, ist De vita et fatis unsere eigentliche Quelle.
