122 his own evaluation and criticism. Where possible, he draws his own (often tentative) conclusions. His evaluations are sound and his conclusions always plausible. This work is fully indexed, has a rich bibliography and contains 17 plates of reproductions of manuscript fragments. As con- trasted with VAN LOOPIK'S work, it presents a far more detailed, and hence meaningful, description of the manuscript sources (pp. 95-119), and a very carefully reasoned justification of the methodology he has adopted in editing the text (pp. 121-138). On the other hand, what is, of course, lack- ing is a commentary on this very difficult and puzzling text. We are still bound to refer to M. ISH-SHALOM-FRIEDMAN'S pioneering edition of Vienna 1908, which, though it may have "set new standards of erudition and analytic rigor" (p. 70), "cannot contribute to ... [the] task of text- criticism" because of its "mixture of readings available to him", chosen in each case according to his own editorial 'judgement', "which by fusing rather than filtering sources... creates a new rendition of Baraita de- Melekhet ha-Mishkan" (p. 113).
