Their essential content is usually a single pregnant idea which has been impressed on the prophet's mind as the Word of Yahweh, and which he then has clothed in a more extended literary form suitable for public presentation. The different types of oracle-Reproach, Threat, Promise, Exhortation-have more or less characteristic literary structures. The prophetic literature also preserves traces of the pre-literary form of certain oracles.
