Introduction: New Testament Ethics 49. INTRODUCTION: NEW TESTAMENT ETHICS Robert W. Wall Is a New Testament Ethics Possible? The NT canon of the Christian Church is a diverse col- lection of literary works, composed by different writers whose unique perceptions of God interpreted his salvation for audiences with differing needs and backgrounds. So diverse is the NT that there are those who find the task of writing a coherent biblical ethics difficult if not impossible.1 Indeed, how can there be a single ethos which ties up all the loose ends? In part this frustration arises out of a post- Enlightenment concern that reality be configured in a unified and rational schema. Diversity suggests chaos, and should be eliminated at all cost - or so the modern wisdom suggests. It has been the singular occupation of biblical scholars over the last two centuries to give some unified account of the Bible's diversity, often by reducing it or adjusting it in ways which unify it. Current efforts in organizing the diversity of the biblical ethos have proved disappointing.
