In Memoriam

In Memoriam 6 In Memoriam REV. PAUL ROWNTREE CLIFFORD With the death of Paul Rowntree Clifford in January 2003, just a month short of his ninetieth birthday, IAMS mourns the loss of one of its founders, its first treasurer and a remarkable friend, encourager and reconciler to hundreds of us around the world. He has left us a most engaging and readable book of memoirs: An Ecumenical Pilgrimage, which I reviewed in Mission Studies, 24 Vol XII, No. 2, p.289-290. Here I simply recall that his long and fruitful life had three main chapters: Bom in one of London's poorer districts to parents who, against many odds, had succeeded in developing a struggling Baptist chapel into an outstanding model of mission to the whole of the life of an urban community, the West Ham Central Mission, Paul joined his father there when he was ordained in 193 8, only to find himself in one of the most demanding situations in Britain during World War II. West Ham was severely bombed and the Mission found itself responsible for caring for thousands of homeless people. His father died in 1943, so Paul was in charge and brought the Mission and its community http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Mission Studies Brill

Abstract

6 In Memoriam REV. His father died in 1943, so Paul was in charge and brought the Mission and its community
