HERMAN DE LA FONTAINE VERWEY In Memoriam H. F. Wijnman Hendrik Frederik Wijnman, a member of the advisory board of Quaerendo, died in Amsterdam on 20 June 1979 at the age of eighty-four. With his death we have lost a remarkable Amsterdam figure who was widely known as a historian, chiefly of his home town, Amsterdam, as a biographer, chiefly of poets and painters, and as a librarian. Hendrik Frederik Wijnman was born on 20 Septernber 1894 in an old house on the Haarlemmerstraat, next door to the house where once lived the noted collector of natural curiosities Albert Seba and not far from the home of Catrina Hoogsaet (the subject of portraits by Rem- brandt). In later life he was to write biographies of both of them. His father was a hatter who spent most of his time reading, his favourite book being the ten-volume work by Adolph Streckfusz, De geschiedenis van de wereld voor het volk verhaald [The history of the world told for ordinary people], edited by Bernard ter Haar.
