Don Ramon Menendez Pidal ('A proposito dell y llatinas', BRAE, xxiv, 165-216) shows the inadequacy of the structuralist approach, even when substratum influences are taken into account, restates his views, outlined in Origenes, on Lat. l > [, -mb- > -m-, -nd- > -n-, -nn-, discusses the wide area of Lat. -ll-, l- > lin the Hispanic dialects, and the presence of -ll- > J in S. Italy, relates to this development Lat. -nn-, -n-, and r-, -r-, and re-examines, in the light of recent research, apico-palatal and related articulations of Lat. /- and -ll- in W. Asturias-N.W. Leon on the one hand, and Gascony-Upper Aragon on the other. He finally comments on historico­ geographical interferencies, stressing the fundamental impor­ tance, in the examination of this complex question, of S.
