Don Ramon Menendez Pidal ('A proposito dell y llatinas', BRAE, xxiv, 165-216) shows the inadequacy of the structuralist approach, even when substratum influences are taken into account, restates his views, outlined in Origenes, on Lat. l > [, -mb- > -m-, -nd- > -n-, -nn-, discusses the wide area of Lat. -ll-, l- > lin the Hispanic dialects, and the presence of -ll- > J in S. Italy, relates to this development Lat. -nn-, -n-, and r-, -r-, and re-examines, in the light of recent research, apico-palatal and related articulations of Lat. /- and -ll- in W. Asturias-N.W. Leon on the one hand, and Gascony-Upper Aragon on the other. He finally comments on historico geographical interferencies, stressing the fundamental impor tance, in the examination of this complex question, of S. Italic immigration and the consequent importation of S. Italic dialectal
