Heresy and Orthodoxy in the Armenian Church HERESY AND ORTHODOXY IN THE ARMENIAN CHURCH Krikor Haleblian But after all this has been said, perhaps the greatest heresy is the heresy of heresy, the choice of choice, the willingness to accept divisions in the church so that we can be comfortable in our several isolations.1 For the last 1700 years, the Armenian Church has been baptizing her children in the name of the Holy Trinity, marrying them with the sign of the Holy Cross, and burying their dead in the hope of the Resurrection, but this has neither assured her freedom from heresies arising from within her bosom nor has it hindered others from charging her of heresy. From her inception, the Armenian Church claimed apostolic origin and accepted the first three Ecumenical Councils, but mainly on account of its rejection of Chalcedon, she has been viewed to this day with suspicion by some. In what follows, I will attempt to argue that much of the charges and counter charges of heresy are mostly due to a tacit attempt at making Christianity contextual. Eugene S.
