Almost nowhere else, except in Sudan or Mozambique, was the change so sharp from the missionary to the post-colonial church and nowhere too has the lat- ter been stronger. There are very few studies of the Catholic laity in Africa and this one, concentrating as it does on one of the Catholic heartlands, is a most helpful contribution to 20th century church history. It is also another addition to the very considerable scholarly output of the Igbo Catholic clergy. In this journal, one of whose founders was Archbishop Stephen Ezeanya, that is to be particularly happily noted. But the work of Cardinal Arinze, Mgr Adigwe, Dr. Obi, Fr. Ikenga-Metuh, Dr. Omenka and others is of a collective significance which certainly merits recognition in a journal of African religion.
