VDW. REVIEW OF BOOKS H. M. ORLINSKY, Under standing the Bible through History and Archaeology, Ktav Publishing House, New York 1972, X and 292 pp. (with many illustrations, charts and maps), cloth $ 7.95 (This essay, originally written for the use in college survey courses, is meant for the general reader and provides a brief narrative account of the history of Israel in Old Testament times and the relationship between the development of its society and the growth of Biblical tradition. Apart from a preface, the author gives a survey of this history (printed on the left hand pages) illustrated by selected Biblical passages both in the original language and in translation (printed on the right hand pages). The book can be recommended to Biblical students and to all who want a short and reliable introduction to Biblical history, archaeology and literature). VDW. H. SCHRECKENBERG, Die Flavius-Josephus-Tradition in Antike und Mittelalter (Arbeiten zur Literatur und Geschichte des Hellenistischen Judentums V), E. J. Brill, Leiden 1972, XV and 215 pp., cloth f 72,- (In addition to the author's Bibliographie Zu Flavius josepbus the present study is a T?orarbeit to a new critical edition of Josephus' writings. In compiling the materials for A Complete Concordance to Josephus, NIESE'S editio major (and the editiones minores based on it) proved to be antiquated in many respects. At present it is not only possible to adduce more testimo- nies than NIESE could do, but also to rely on better editions of the so-called Nebeniiberlieferung and the ancient translations of Josephus' writings. The present study is not a traditio-historical or text historical treatment of this literature, but gives an annotated list of the relevant manuscripts and in addition to this, a most useful listing of ancient and mediaeval authors who translated, excerpted, citated, mentioned or alluded to Josephus' works. The author's meticulous description of the use made by these authors of Josephus' works enables the reader to get an impression of the influence these writings had in ancient and mediaeval times. Although it is too early yet to evaluate the tradition history and the text history in a satisfying and proper way, the author has added to his listings provision- ally a short essay on this subject. The historical works of Josephus are handed down by the Christian churches and have been constantly subject to interpolation, revision and censorship in the interest of their various religious and political views. Due to the increasing historical and apologe- tical interest of the early Christians, the writings of Josephus (and Philo)
