Abstract

407 "line of battle"). For the causative use of the middle cf. K.G. I, 108, Schw. II, 232. - 58: ro'tyoq. "Employe adverbialement" is an insufficient explanation: if the word is taken to be used as an abstractum pro concreto (` `something quick"), it forms an apposition to the unexpressed internal object of the verb (cf. K.G. I, 311). The phrase lhq is to be explained differently: "according as there is (was) quickness" (cf. Hdt. VIII 107, 1 lhq elxe ExaaioS). - 60 : xovlei. A reminiscence of the Homeric phrase xoviov<eq 7t£Ô£OLO. The asyndeton has climactic force (K.G. II, 340-1). - 60: dtcpp6g. Gr. rightly rejects the idea (adopted by L.-P.) that this forms a transition to the nautical imagery of 62-4. - 62-4. L.-P. omit to refer to D. van Nes, Die maritime Bildersprache des Aischylos (Gron- ingen 1963), 11, 31-2, 80, 123. - 63: Not ex- plained by L.-P.: cf. van Nes, 11-2. - 64: xepaetov. Cf. van Nes, 31-2 (who rightly calls Xepaetov "eine variatio per abusionem des homerischen xod xlpaov 394]", and makes important remarks on the oxymoron). - 65: XML "And therefore": for xai in- troducing a conclusion cf. my note on
