With this book on the foundation of religious learning, Burkard Porzelt oﬀ ers a short introduction to religious pedagogy. Rather than seeking to present a theoretical trea- tise, the author rather explicitly pursues a practical interest (cf. p. 7). Porzelt introduces readers to the key problems in current religious pedagogy as a way of encouraging them to inquire critically into their own practice of religious teaching. In this sense, Grundlegung religiöses Lernen is not an empirical work, but it does discuss concepts that are fundamental to empirical studies. Grundlegung religiöses Lernen is divided into six chapters, book ended by an intro- duction and an after word. In the ﬁ rst chapter, Porzelt introduces the concept of reli- gious learning. He deﬁ nes religious learning as a complex mixture of intentional and spontaneous processes, always performed by actual people. From this Porzelt con- cludes that academic religious pedagogy must never lose sight of the concrete subject (cf. p. 17). In the second chapter the notion of learning is described in more detail.
