By arguing that “Sola Scriptura means that only Scripture, because it is God’s inspired Word, is our inerrant, sufficient, and final authority for the church” (23), Barrett is intent on reaffirming the formal principle of sola scriptura and reemphasizing the authority of scripture in face of certain challenges in today’s church.The first part (chapters 1–3) historically retrieves the shift of authority since the Reformation and sets forth threats to the authority of scripture. First, Barrett delineates the contexts and content of sola scriptura of the Reformation, affirming the final authority of scripture in Protestant Reformation theology. In response to this question, Barrett argues that the reformers concurred in the supreme and final authority of scripture and relates sola scriptura to the inerrancy and infallibility of scripture.
