33 GOD AND THE STRANGER G. David Schwartz Cincinnati, Ohio I. What if the three visitors to Abraham's tent, in Genesis 18, were creatures from outer space? Would that change our respect for Abraham? Would it change the way we look upon/toward God? What we seem to respect in the person of Abraham is his character. We compose our religions and our personal faith around the character of Abraham as portrayed not in this one, but several, stories about the patriarch. Like- wise, we relate to God not according to what we are told God will or will not do, has or has not done, is or is not doing, but according to the character of God portrayed in various stories. We should not be afraid of modifying and/or expanding the texts which speak about the character of God. Nor should we become full- fledged members of the school of Pyrrho of Elis if we fasten too rigidly on the fact that the very authors of Torah modified and/or expanded wisdom through expounding and modernizing the traditional. Permuta- tion and variation are means of changing not God-in/as-Deity, but our perception of the ever expansive. We are told that
