In 1970, while still working on his study of Henry VII, S. B. Chrimes invited the biographers of Henry IV, Henry VI, and Edward IV, together with three experts of the aristocracy, late medieval Wales and Northern England, for a conference on fifteenth-century England. Two years later their contributions were published in a rather thin but important vol- ume. It not only represented the "state of the art" of medieval politi- cal historiography during the early 1970s but has also become the first of a whole series of conference proceedings on the period before the Tudor era.
