French Studies THE ROMANTIC ERA By MARJORIE SHAW, Senior Lecturer in French in the University of She.ffield I. GENERAL LITERARY CRITICISM. L. Cellier, L' Epopee humanitaire et les grands mythes romantiques, SEDES, 370 pp., was originally pub. as L'Epopee romantique (I954). In addition to the change of title, there is also an appx on 'Le romantisme et le mythe d'Orphee', pp. 343-67. It seems deplorable that such a study, even though modestly designated 'opuscule' by its author, should appear without an index. Presumably it appeared too soon to take note of the very thorough study of this last theme by B. J uden, Tradztions orphiques et tendances mystiques dans le romantisme franyais (I Boo--55) (Bibl. fran<_;aise er romane, C. 29), Klincksieck, 8o6 pp., which traces the orphic myth in great detail but with esp. reference to Ballanche, M. de Guerin and Nerval. P. Benichou, 'Jeune-France et Bousingots: essai de mise au point', RHLF, 7I: 439-62, is a very scholarly, well-documented art. discussing the correct use of the term 'bousingot', first used in a Figaro article to mean 'agitateur republicain', but subsequently used to refer to the younger group of poets and artists which flourished after I83o.
