French Studies THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY By GEoRGE EvANs, University College of Swansea, Wales and PHILIP RoBINSON, University of Kent I. GENERAL BIBLIOGRAPHY. G. Tonelli's deceptively brief, A Short-title List of Subject Dictionaries of the 16th, 17th and 18th Cs as Aids to the History of Ideas, London, Warburg Institute, 64 pp., errs on the side of rigour in defining dictionaries, and 'The 18th Century: A Current Bibliography', PQ, 50: 321-531, includes selected French material, distributed by subject-matter, not language. Two arts reflect on recent work: A. Cioranescu lucidly explains his aims and difficulties in 'Notes sur la Bibliographie Litteraire du XVIIIe siecle', pp. 361-70, in Dix-huitieme siecle (see below), and G. May, in a rev. art., 'Le r8e siecle a l'honneur: bilan d'un effort de 17 ans', DS, 14: 283-307, draws inferences from theSupplement to Cabeen (see TWML, 30). LITERARY HISTORY. J. Vier's two-val. Histoire de la !itt. fran;. XVIIIe siecle, A. Colin, 1970, 352 and 1,050 pp., despite drab appearance, is one of the best of recent general treatments. R. Pomeau, L'Age classique III (I68o-IJ2o), Arthaud, 293 pp., 87 illus, is a clear, racy account of the transitional period's ideas and lit., which can be supplemented by T.
