Roland Bonnel and Catherine Rubinger, NY, Peter Lang, xi+ 449 pp., is an important study of I9 fimmes savantes, with essays by A. Nabarra, 'Mme Dunoyer et La Quintessence: la rencontre d'une journaliste et d'un journal' (45-76); S. Jones-Day, 'A woman writer's dilemma: Mme de Gomez and the early eighteenth-century novel' (77-98); M.-L. Girou-Swiderski, 'La Belle ou la bete? Mme de Villeneuve, la meconnue' (9g-128); J.
