68 French Studies EARLY MEDIEVAL LITERATURE By MARIANNE J. AILES, Wadham College, Oxford I. GENERAL ABLH, 77, Oxford, Blackwell, 253 pp., has useful coverage of the Middle Ages: pp 22-32, the most relevant section being the Crusades. Crusading literature is also included in BSScLE, I3, ed. M.-L. Favreau-Lille, which extremely usefully covers not only recent but also forthcoming publications and work in progress. Midiivales, 25: 95-IOI' looks at the child from the perspective of religious symbolism in a range of 'secular' texts, both romances and chansons de geste. R. H. Bloch, 'The once and future Middle Ages', MLQ, 54:67-76, looks at the 'new medievalism'. Current directions of criticism are presented in a very positive light. In particular he signals inderdisciplinary awareness and gender issues as part of the changing face of medievalism.
