Salvemini (Cape) revised by the author 45 years after first publication and translated from the Italian, is an impressive analysis of the break-up of the feudal and monarchical regime, 1788-92; the other, by A. Goodwin (Hutchinson's University Library) is a brief, balanced, all-round survey likely to be useful to students. R. Priouret's La Franc-mafonnerie sous les Lys, Grasset, affords an authoritative mise-au-point as regards the diffusion and in fluence of freemasonry in France in the period immediately before and immediately after the Revolution.
