Late Ottoman Studies are, in the wake of the contestation of the previously dominant ‘decline’ paradigm, presently seeing a phase of intense revisitation and reinterpretation. e 1880-1914 period appears to be a crucial phase for the evaluation of the relationship between the Ottoman world and modernity, one that allows us to draw a more balanced picture of the situation during these last three decades of the Empire, between the reforming impulse given by the tanzimāt starting during the 1830s and expanding from the 1850s to the 1870s and the fall of the Empire following World War I. Even if the attention for this period generally focuses on political matters, with the question of Ottoman constitutionalism, urban studies are crucial in the perception of the importance of this moment, and Jens Hanssen’s Fin de Siècle Beirut is no doubt a decisive contribution to the present historiographical explorations of this long- neglected
