In this e<;lition Mark DeVries updates the content from lessons learned, research conducted, and insight gleaned from experience. The major changes to the text involve a rewrite of chapter 12 which explores how to implement a family-based approach to youth ministry, and the addition of three appendices that provide programming examples. The first eleven chapters are updated versions of the earlier edition. In these chapters he explores the origins of a family-based approach to youth ministry and describes why he believes it is a healthier approach to ministry with youth. He explains why traditional approaches to youth ministry that isolate teenagers from the larger church through specialized programming rather than integrating them into it are ultimately counter-productive. According to DeVries, family-based youth ministry is a biblical alternative that "accesses the incomparable power of the nuclear family and connects students to an extended family of Christian adults to the end that those students grow towards maturity in Christ."
