EXEGESIS AND THEOLOGY IN THE LXX: ISAIAH V 26-30 by RONALD L. TROXEL Spring Green, Wisconsin I Emanuel Tov has justifiably protested against the tendency to assume that every variation of the LXX from its (reconstructed) Vorlage represents theological exegesis, as if no other considerations guided the translators.' 1 In fact, he argues, two other types of exegesis were of greater importance for their work. Fundamental to all translation is linguistic exegesis, "die gram- matikalische Identifikation aller W6rter (besonders Formen der Verben und Substantive) in der Sprache der Quelle ... sowie ihre semantische Interpretation" (p. 243). Even if, as J. Barr has sug- gested, the Septuagintal translators did not analyse the text gram- matically as we would,2 they still had to decode it syntactically and lexically.3 3 They sometimes also employed contextual exegesis, reading the passage at hand in the light of its context, which they perceived as "die Verbindung zwischen den Worten ... nicht nur in ihrem unmittelbaren, sondern auch in ihrem weiteren Zusammenhang' ' . 4 103 Such exegesis shows itself "in der Wahl ungewohnlicher Aquivalente, in der Verkniipfung der W6rter, in Zusatzen, Auslassungen und Anderungen" (Tov [n. p. 244).
