Th e United Kingdom, 27 May 2008, no. 26565/05 (Grand Chamber) Th e facts Th e applicant is a Ugandan national who was born in 1974 and lives in London. She has AIDS. She came to the United Kingdom on 28 March 1998 under an assumed name. She was seriously ill, and was admitted to hospital. On 31 March 1998 solicitors lodged an asylum application on her behalf, claim- ing that she had been ill-treated and raped by the National Resistance Movement in Uganda and was in fear of her life and safety if she were returned. By November 1998, the applicant was diagnosed as having two AIDS-defi ning illnesses, and as being extremely advanced from an HIV point of view. In March 2001 a consultant physician prepared an expert report, at the request of the appli- cant’s solicitor, which expressed the view that without continuing regular antiret- roviral treatment and monitoring to ensure that the correct combination of drugs was used,
